Dear Friends in Christ, the People of God called to be the diocese of Maine,
The Psalmist sings, “no good thing will the Lord withhold from those who walk with integrity” (Psalm 84:11).
Yesterday, the Rt. Rev. Mariann Budde, Bishop of Washington, preaching in her cathedral at a prayer service for the new administration, spoke respectfully and directly to President Donald Trump to have mercy. I thank God for Bishop Budde’s courageous witness to Jesus Christ’s amazing grace.
In addition to Bishop Budde’s sermon, the presiding officers of our church, the Most Rev. Sean Rowe, and President of the House of Deputies, Julia Ayala Harris, exhorted us to echo Jesus Christ’s proclamation that the kingdom of heaven is promised to the persecuted, and to answer his call to welcome the stranger.
I honor these three leaders and their faithfulness, and shall join you to emulate their courage: On Christ the solid rock we stand; all other ground is sinking sand.
The Right Reverend Thomas J. Brown
Bishop of Maine
