The Standing Committee has approved Bishop Brown’s sabbatical, which begins on June 24 and concludes at the end of October. His return to official duties and to us will be the 207th Annual Diocesan Convention on Nov. 7.
While he is away, Bishop Brown will neither receive nor be able to respond to emails, phone calls, or texts. He plans to spend his sabbatical visiting with family, resting, traveling, and learning.
During this time, Canon to the Ordinary Teresa Pinney will be in charge of diocesan operations. If a situation arises that requires a bishop, she and Mark Spahr, president of the Standing Committee, will contact a retired bishop ready to help if needed.
The word “sabbatical” comes from the Greek “sabbatikos” and the Latin “sabbaticus,” which also give us “sabbath”—the Biblical day of rest. Please join us in keeping Bishop Brown in your prayers during this period of rest and renewal.

On Tuesday, March 3, Bishop Brown opened the Second Regular Session of the 132nd Legislature in the Maine State Senate with a prayer calling for guidance, compassion, and peace.
We are working toward justice and peace for all people, and public policies that respect the dignity of every human being, both in the state of Maine, the United States, and the world.

The Episcopal Diocese of Maine participates in creative, energizing worship to praise and thank God, to hear the Good News of Jesus Christ and to pray for ourselves and others. We gather as Jesus invited us, around a community table with bread and wine, to celebrate His risen presence and to be renewed and strengthened for the work God gives us to do.
