Prayers from the Society of St. John the Evangelist:
Compassionate God, as you hear the cry of every suffering creature, so hear the groans of our suffering nation. Pierce the hearts of those who sit in the halls of power. Thwart the designs of the tyrants who sow division, foster fear, and erode our civil rights , and who persecute and oppress the least among us. Empower us to speak when many are silent, and to resist in thought, word, and deed, in the name of Christ, the Prince of Peace. Amen.
O God and Father of us all, you have taught us that in your Son there is no division in ethnicity, class, or gender; heal the hearts and minds of those who cling to these divisions, and rebuke those who proclaim and profit form them; through the same Son in whom we all are made one, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Almighty God, you are the ruler and judge of all; break the scepter of the wicked in this land, that the innocent may live in justice, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.
Gracious God, the refuge of all who put their trust in you; hear the cry of the poor, and cast down those in power who make no place for the homeless, the immigrant, the refugee, and any who struggle to afford a home; through Jesus Christ, the builder and cornerstone of the house of God. Amen.
Prayer by the Rev. Barbara Briggs, rector of St. Margaret’s, Belfast
Gracious and loving God, you knew how it felt to be cast out, persecuted, and threatened with imprisonment and even death. Uphold your beloved children who have come to this country seeking safety, freedom, justice and life, yet who now quake with fear. By the power of your love set us free from fear and hatred, and bring us into the land of your mercy, through Christ our Savior, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, One God, for ever and ever. Amen.
