In 1786, Franz Joseph Haydn was commissioned by a Spanish priest compose a series of meditative musical reflections, each relating to one of the seven last words of Christ on the cross mentioned in the Gospels of Matthew, Luke, and John. A year later, the composer released a version for string quartet, which has become the most popular. This version will be performed by the Dirigo Quartet, and interspersed with spoken reflections, as was Haydn’s intent.
