SUMMARY:Doctrine of Discovery Learning Weekend
DESCRIPTION:The Council on Indigenous Relations and the Province One Justice Network invite you to a long weekend of learning opportunities about the Doctrine of Discovery. This doctrine\, a principle in international law and religious doctrine that originated in the 15th century\, justified the taking of indigenous lands and the subjugation of their peoples under the premise that discovery granted rights to the discoverers. The Episcopal Diocese of Maine has taken an historic lead role in repudiating this complex assault on our Indigenous neighbors. \nEvents at the Cathedral\nOn Saturday\, Sept. 12\, 2-4 p.m. all are invited to the cathedral’s Upper Hall for an interactive map experience led by Wabanaki REACH: Restoration\, Engagement\, Advocacy\, Change\, and Healing. This program\, Interacting with Wabanaki Maine History\, was created by people who advocated for and supported the Maine Wabanaki-State Child Welfare Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Participants engage in a story of particular events in the history of 400 years of colonization of Wabanaki people by Europeans in this territory now called the state of Maine. This highly engaging experience\, which is suitable for ages 14+\, requires our full participation in order to genuinely increase our understanding of colonization and what it means for current descendants and future generations; to reflect on what story we are writing for our grandchildren. \nREGISTER HERE \nOn Sunday\, Sept. 13 at 2 p.m.\, the cathedral will host a panel discussion in Emmanuel Chapel with Sarah Augustine and the Rev. Joe Hubbard on Wabanaki Land and Child Removal and the Doctrine of Discovery. Hubbard and Augustine are members of The Episcopal Church’s Truth\, Justice\, & Healing Commission of Native Boarding Schools. Augustine is a Pueblo (Tewa) descendent\, executive director of the Coalition to Dismantle the Doctrine of Discovery\, and author of “The Land is Not Empty.” Hubbard is executive director of Ministry on the Margins in Bismarck\, ND\, and convenor of the Episcopal Indigenous Justice Roundtable. Augustine is the executive director of the Coalition to Dismantle the Doctrine of Discovery. SUMMARY:Summer Finale Weekend 2026
DESCRIPTION:The Episcopal Diocese of Maine is inviting you to celebrate the end of summer together with a weekend at Camp Bishopswood in Hope\, located on Lake Megunticook\, about five miles from Camden. Summer Finale is a three-day event (with a one-day option for Saturday) that welcomes people to come stay in camper cabins and to play (a lot!) in our beautiful Maine woods. Meals are offered in the dining hall on a set schedule\, and there are several outdoor activities and prayer opportunities offered throughout the weekend. It’s a relaxed setting where folks can choose what\, and how much\, they’d like to join.  \nThis year\, check in begins at 5 p.m. on Friday\, Sept. 11 and participants will pack up following breakfast on Sunday\, Sept. 13 (to depart by noon). The day-only option begins at 10 a.m. on Sept. 12\, ends at 4 p.m.\, and includes lunch.  \nAll are welcome … we really mean it! Although Camp Bishopswood serves our youth during its regular season\, Summer Finale is a time when everyone joins the fun! DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand\, the first day of Summer Finale will be an opportunity for lay preachers to be together in conversation about what’s working in our contexts\, and to ask questions of others in the field. Perhaps one or two among us would be willing to share a mini-sermon\, too! This event is open to anyone who has completed the Backstory Preaching class or those who plan to begin it in January. \nRSVP for this event is separate from the Summer Finale registration\, so please complete both forms if you also plan to stay for Summer Finale (the weekend of fun at Camp Bishopswood). \nLay preaching begins at 10 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m.\, when the rest of the Summer Finale folks will join us at camp and we switch gears to fun in community time.
