SUMMARY:Doctrine of Discovery Learning Weekend
DESCRIPTION:The Council on Indigenous Relations and the Province One Justice Network invite you to a long weekend of learning opportunities about the Doctrine of Discovery. While it sounds benign\, this doctrine\, a principle in international and religious law that originated in the 15th century\, justified the taking of indigenous lands and the subjugation of their peoples under the premise that discovery granted rights to the discoverers. The Episcopal Diocese of Maine has taken an historic lead role in repudiating this complex assault on our Indigenous neighbors. \nEvents at the Cathedral\nOn Saturday\, Sept. 12\, 2-4 p.m. all are invited to the cathedral’s Upper Hall for an interactive map experience led by Wabanaki REACH: Restoration\, Engagement\, Advocacy\, Change\, and Healing. This program\, Interacting with Wabanaki Maine History\, was created by people who advocated for and supported the Maine Wabanaki-State Child Welfare Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Participants engage in a story of particular events in the history of 400 years of colonization of Wabanaki people by Europeans in this territory now called the state of Maine. This highly engaging experience\, which is suitable for ages 14+\, requires our full participation in order to genuinely increase our understanding of colonization and what it means for current descendants and future generations; to reflect on what story we are writing for our grandchildren. \nREGISTER HERE \nOn Sunday\, Sept. 13 at 2 p.m.\, the cathedral will host a panel discussion in Emmanuel Chapel with Sarah Augustine and the Rev. Joe Hubbard on Wabanaki Land and Child Removal and the Doctrine of Discovery. Hubbard and Augustine are members of The Episcopal Church’s Truth\, Justice\, & Healing Commission of Native Boarding Schools. Augustine is a Pueblo (Tewa) descendent\, executive director of the Coalition to Dismantle the Doctrine of Discovery\, and author of “The Land is Not Empty.” Hubbard is executive director of Ministry on the Margins in Bismarck\, ND\, and convenor of the Episcopal Indigenous Justice Roundtable. DESCRIPTION:The Episcopal Diocese of Maine is inviting you to celebrate the end of summer together with a weekend at Camp Bishopswood in Hope\, located on Lake Megunticook\, about five miles from Camden. Summer Finale is a three-day event (with a one-day option for Saturday) that welcomes people to come stay in camper cabins and to play (a lot!) in our beautiful Maine woods. Meals are offered in the dining hall on a set schedule\, and there are several outdoor activities and prayer opportunities offered throughout the weekend. It’s a relaxed setting where folks can choose what\, and how much\, they’d like to join.  \nThis year\, check in begins at 5 p.m. on Friday\, Sept. 11 and participants will pack up following breakfast on Sunday\, Sept. 13 (to depart by noon). The day-only option begins at 10 a.m. on Sept. 12\, ends at 4 p.m.\, and includes lunch.  \nAll are welcome … we really mean it! SUMMARY:The Urgency of Now: An Author Talk with David Beckmann
DESCRIPTION:David Beckmann\, former Bread for the World president and World Food Prize laureate\, discusses faith\, the fight against poverty\, and the urgency of the moment.\n After decades of progress against poverty\, progress is grinding to a halt. Nearly 14\,000 Mainers have lost food assistance since changes to the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program took effect\, including more than 4\,300 children. In Portland\, SNAP enrollment has fallen nearly 14 percent. \nAgainst that backdrop\, the Cathedral Church of St. Luke will host Rev. David Beckmann\, one of the nation’s leading advocates for ending hunger and poverty\, for “The Urgency of Now\,” an author talk and conversation on Thursday\, Sept. 17\, at 6:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. \nBeckmann has spent his career working to demonstrate that poverty is not inevitable. As president of Bread for the World for nearly three decades\, he mobilized people of faith to advocate for changes in public policy that helped reduce hunger and poverty in the United States and around the world. His new book\, “Poverty Abolitionists: Faith\, Activism\, and Hope for Difficult Times” (Bloomsbury\, 2026)\, argues that much of that hard-won progress is now being reversed—and that people who care about poverty can help get it moving in the right direction again. \n“Poverty is not inevitable. We have already shown that dramatic progress against poverty is possible\,” Beckmann said. “The challenge now is to get that progress moving again. People of faith can help build the political will to make that happen.” \nDuring his Portland talk\, Beckmann will draw on lessons from decades of successful anti-poverty advocacy to examine what has worked\, what is changing now and how people of all faiths and no-faith can respond. With midterm elections approaching\, he will also discuss the importance of making poverty and hunger priorities in the decisions that voters ask of their elected leaders\, \nIn “Poverty Abolitionists\,” Beckmann draws on evidence\, history and a lifetime of anti-poverty work to offer five essential insights and 10 strategies for building a movement to end poverty. The book calls on people who have a heart for those experiencing poverty and hope for positive social change to turn that concern into sustained action. \nAbout David Beckmann \nA former World Bank economist\, Beckmann received the World Food Prize in 2010 for Bread for the World’s contribution to the reduction of hunger in Africa. He now leads the Circle of Protection\, a coalition of Christian leaders and organizations advocating for people experiencing poverty\, and serves as Dean’s Advisor for Political and Economic Justice at Virginia Theological Seminary.

DESCRIPTION:Our Council of Indigenous Relations invites you to participate in the National Day of Remembrance. Also known as Orange Shirt Day\, it is an annual opportunity to remember and honor those who attended Indian boarding schools\, to tell the truth about this history\, and how it continues to impact Native communities today. Many boarding schools were supported and run by Christian denominations and churches. As we remember this legacy\, Christians have a responsibility to engage in the work of truth telling. Here are two ways to join in the National Day of Remembrance. \nEvery Child Matters Orange Shirt Day Walk\n5 – 6:30 p.m.\nIndian Island Pavilion\, Old Town\nAll ages are welcome to wear orange to join the Penobscot Nation in remembrance and celebration of survivors\, their families\, and those lost to residential and boarding schools. A limited number of shirts will be available. \nEngaging in the Work of Repair\n7:30 – 9 p.m. \, online\nEveryone is invited to join the Coalition to Dismantle the Doctrine of Discovery for a presentation by the Rev.
