SUMMARY:Advent Study Offering: Five-Week Course on Matthew's Gospel
DESCRIPTION:All are invited to join a group at St Margaret’s\, Belfast for a free\, online and in-person short course on Matthew’s Gospel\, which is the focus of Lectionary readings for Year A starting in Advent 2025. \n \nMatthew’s Gospel is the first in the canon—that is\, the 27 books of the New Testament. It is one of four New Testament gospels\, through which we learn about Jesus and his followers. A Jewish text written after the destruction of the Second Temple in Jerusalem in the war against Rome in 66-70CE\, Matthew wrote intending to present contours of Judaism in the context of that catastrophe for Jewish followers of Jesus. \nTo join the course or if you have questions\, please email the instructor\, Canon Deirdre Good\, for a course outline and online materials before Nov. 21. \nCanon Deirdre Good\, Th.D.\, a parishioner of St Margaret’s\, and a licensed lay preacher in the diocese\, taught New Testament and Christian Origins at the General Theological Seminary in New York City for 28 years. SUMMARY:Sacred Writings in Darkness
DESCRIPTION:Poets Shana Rose\, a parishioner at St. Luke’s\, and Julia Baker\, chaplain at Mercy Hospital and parishioner at St. Alban’s\, Cape Elizabeth\, are hosting a new ecumenical ministry at St. Luke’s Cathedral. “Sacred Writings in Darkness\,” will be a time every month for guided sacred writing—poetry\, prayers\, songs\, vignettes\, etc—with a different theme every session. The gatherings are designed to help spiritually feed participants longing for respite from the chaos of our wider world right now. They will begin with Baker and Rose providing simple grounding content like a prayer or brief message\, and the rest of the sessions will be for participants to write\, followed by time at the end for sharing their completed work. \nThese sessions will be held monthly in Emmanuel Chapel\, harnessing the sacred reverence the space provides. The first theme will be the Gaudete Sunday Gospel and the Winter Solstice. To sign up\, email the cathedral office.

SUMMARY:Paul Winter Consort: Winter Solstice Concert
DESCRIPTION:In 1980\, Paul envisioned “Winter Solstice” as “the most universal milestone we could celebrate…\, which embraces everyone who lives in the northern hemisphere of our planet.” “Central to all the traditions of solstice is the renewal of spirit\, symbolized by the rebirth of the sun. [It] is a time for healing and hope[…] a time to celebrate community and relatedness; and a time to honor the diversity and the unity of this great cornucopia of life on Earth\, in remembering the solstice\, we resonate once again with the rhythm of the cosmos\, and allow our hearts to embrace the optimism of our ancient knowledge that the light will overcome the darkness[…] Making music at solstice is one way to celebrate our amazing journey. If\, in our listening\, we are carried by the music\, then perhaps the experience of that moment can be a hologram of the entire journey. In reality\, the journey is right now\, wherever we are. And when we are listening\, each moment is the beginning.” We invite you to join the celebration. \nThe Consort includes Paul Winter\, soprano sax; Eugene Friesen\, cello; Brazilian pianist Henrique Eisenmann; Bulgarian bassist Peter Slavov; German percussionist Bertram Lehmann; organist Tim Brumfield; and the beloved voice of Theresa Thomason. \nMore information and tickets \nLast year’s performance at the University of Southern Maine sold out.
