SUMMARY:COP27: UN Climate Change Conference
DESCRIPTION:At The Episcopal Church’s 80th General Convention in July\, the House of Bishops passed a statement titled\, “Expressing the Mind of the House on Climate and Our Vocation in Christ.” \n“In this statement\, we see the international Episcopal reaffirmation to attend to the climate crisis as it impacts all our lives\,” said the Rev. Melanie Mullen\, director of reconciliation\, justice and creation care. “COP advocacy is a critical piece of our churchwide strategy for creation care and climate justice.” \nIn addition to the bishops’ statement\, the 80th General Convention passed a resolution encouraging continuing church participation in COP meetings to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change\, among other commitments to the work of addressing global climate change and environmental justice. \n“The Episcopal Church’s engagement with COP27 is one meaningful way we can support global witness in a time of climate emergency\,” Mullen said. “At a time when people worldwide are facing dangerous levels of heat and fire threats\, The Episcopal Church can raise a powerful voice for the ways people of faith and civil society will demand multilevel action on climate justice.” \nThe presiding bishop is expected to announce his nominations for the first hybrid delegation by mid-September. Members will meet monthly ahead of COP27 via video conferencing\, as well as daily during the November event. \nLearn more and apply by Sept. 1 in English or Spanish. SUMMARY:Sacred Songs and Readings Service
DESCRIPTION:Sacred Songs & Readings: The Lord’s Prayer\n3 pm Sunday\, November 13 \nThere will be a Sacred Songs and Readings service on November 13\, exploring the great prayer that Jesus taught us. The genesis of the program was contemplating a beautiful work by Felix Mendelssohn: his sixth organ sonata. Whereas his other organ sonatas were purely instrumental and often based on Mendelssohn’s inspiration for Bach\, his sixth sonata is a theme and variations on a hymn that Martin Luther wrote to celebrate the Lord’s Prayer\, ‘Our Father\, God in heaven above.’ We will sing this wonderful chorale just before hearing the Mendelssohn organ piece. Other hymns will include Hymn 615 “Thy kingdom come!” and Hymn 474 “When I survey the wondrous cross\,” (which is used in the last section of the Mendelssohn organ sonata)\, and a poem by Thomas Troeger “Let All Who Pray the Prayer Christ Taught\,” sung to the melody of Dundee. There will be readings and poetry that reflect upon the great prayer\, including Becky Pride’s ‘Dear Father.’ \nThe service will include a piece for reflection: Louange à l´Éternité de Jésus (Praise for the eternity of Jesus) from Olivier Messiaen’s “Quartet for the end of time” for cello and organ\, played by John Bennett and Bruce Fithian\, Saint Mary’s Music Director. One of the many delights of the Camino that Bruce experienced in May was hearing (and trying to recite!) the Lord’s Prayer during the pilgrims’ mass in France and Spain. It is magical to hear these immortal words in French and Spanish. The prayer is truly universal\, and this service aims at celebrating this. \nCome join the celebration of The Lord’s Prayer!
