SUMMARY:Protecting Houses of Worship
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, October 13\, 2022 \n9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. \nWestbrook Performing Arts Center\, 471 Stroudwater Street\, Westbrook \nFaith-based events and houses of worship\, such as churches\, synagogues\, and mosques\, are inherently welcoming\, with open access and publicly available schedules for services and events. However\, this welcoming nature can pose risks. The past few years have seen a tragic increase in the number of hate crimes\, and houses of worship have often been the target of those crimes. As leaders of Maine’s faith-based organizations and houses of worship\, you can take steps to proactively reduce risks and provide safe\, secure and resilient places of worship and faith-based gatherings. \nBrought to you by Maine Emergency Management Agency (MEMA); Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA); Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Boston Field Office\, Portland Resident Agency; U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) Community Relations Service (CRS); and U.S. Attorney’s Office\, District of Maine\, along with the participation of local law enforcement\, Our goal is to provide practical information\, tools and resources to help bolster emergency preparedness efforts and foster best practices to keep Maine’s faith-based events and houses of worship safe. \nTopics discussed during the event will include: \n\nSecurity\, Risk and Vulnerability Assessment\nActive Shooter Preparedness\, Response & Resources\nBuilding Your Own Emergency Operations Plan\nFaith-Based Experiences with Public Safety Issues\n\nClick here to register for this event. Seating is limited.

SUMMARY:Beyond the Rainbow Flag: Walking the Walk of Radical Inclusion
DESCRIPTION:An Afternoon of Conversation with Brandan Robertson and Marpheen Chann \nSaturday\, October 15\, 2022\, 4:00pm \nSaint Ansgar Lutheran Church\, 515 Woodford Street\, Portland \nSo… your website says you’re a welcoming community\, a rainbow flag flies out front\, you use gender-inclusive language\, and you make sure you greet strangers who walk through your doors. But is all of that really enough? \nJoin author\, activist\, and public theologian Rev. Brandan Robertson (a.k.a. “The TikTok Preacher”) and Maine’s own Marpheen Chann (author of Moon in Full: A Modern Day Coming of Age Story) on Saturday\, October 15\, as they discuss Robertson’s vision of “True Inclusion\,” that invites communities to move from mere welcome to radical embrace\, to become places where people of every race\, gender identity\, sexual orientation\, political affiliation\, disability\, ability\, and socioeconomic status are included\, seen\, heard\, and valued as worthy. \nIn this upcoming October 15 public conversation with Marpheen Chann in Portland\, Robertson will describe action steps we all can take to reform our lives to be increasingly inclusive by embracing the full breadth of diversity represented in every single person. \nWe are pleased to co-sponsor this Maine Council of Churches event bringing this important conversation to our community. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Accepting a Call in a Time of Transition: New Rectors Reflect
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, October 19th  3:00 p.m. \nWhen COVID hit\, the Church was already in a period of transition. Clergy retirements were increasing year-over-year. Some churches with years of stable clergy leadership were faced with finding new clergy persons. Then an unprecedented disruption to the system hit and our entire common life was turned upside down. As with other professions\, clergy\, even those not at retirement age\, began evaluating whether or not they are still in a calling that is right for them. \nIn short\, the church has not been immune from the “Great Resignation.” As the pandemic wore on increasing numbers of rectors retired or moved into new jobs not involving running a church. While this is a challenge for parishes seeking new clergy leaders\, it is an opportunity as well. Anecdotal evidence suggests congregations are venturing outside their traditional hiring profiles and calling younger and more diverse clergy leaders. Join a group of these recently called rectors for a discussion of how they are redefining the role and what inspired them to answer the call. The panel will reflect on how\, after existing through these last few curious years\, we can reimagine parish ministry and strengthen our congregations while engaging our communities. \nLearn more and register here.
