SUMMARY:Youth Retreat Weekend: Faith in the Forest
DESCRIPTION:April 29 – May 1 \nCamp Bishopswood \nFor the first time in two years\, Episcopal Maine Youth will gather in person for an overnight retreat – and we want you to be there! \nREGISTER NOW to join us for a weekend of fun\, friendship\, community service\, and some Jesus thrown in for good measure! All 6th-12th graders welcome. \nThis spring\, Episcopal Maine Youth will gather in person for an overnight retreat on the grounds of Camp Bishopswood. Our theme is Faith in the Forest. We’ll spend time hiking through the trees\, entering into the mythical world of enchantments and woodland creatures\, and wondering what all of this has to do with our lives as faithful Christians. \nThe retreat begins after dinner at 6 PM on Friday\, and concludes with a brief communion service at 10 AM on Sunday. \nVaccinations:\nAll participants must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19\, and will be asked for verification. Please contact Sara D’Angio White with any questions or concerns. \nHousing:\nWe will not base our housing decisions on gender. All cabins will be mixed-gender cabins\, with private spaces for all youth for both changing and bathing. Youth may request being placed in a cabin with specific friends on their registration form. We began non-gender segregated housing pre-Covid\, and are excited to continue this inclusive practice. Please contact Sara D’Angio White with any questions. \n*This weekend coincides with Camp Bishopswood’s Work Weekend. If the rest of your family is interested in volunteering at Bishopswood that weekend\, click here to find out more.

SUMMARY:"Saying 'Peace\, Peace' When There Is No Peace" program
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, May 5\, 2022\n11:00am—1:00pm\nUnitarian Universalist Church of Brunswick\nHybrid Event: In person at 1 Middle Street\, Brunswick or Online via Facebook Live\nRegistration is free\, with an option to donate \nFrom the Hebrew prophet\, Jeremiah\, to the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, to New York Times columnist ZZ Packer\, voices from the margins have warned of the harm done to them when those who benefit from the status quo call for the false “peace” of a polite civility of manners\, rather than a civility of morals that obligates us to interrogate what it means to keep the peace and at what cost. \nJoin the Maine Council of Churches and keynote speaker Dustin Ward for this interactive opportunity to explore the moral and theological dimension of our call to disrupt the status quo when there is no peace for those oppressed by unjust systems and attitudes. Whether you attend in person or join online\, this program will include time in breakout small groups considering how what we’ve heard inspires us to take action in building a culture of justice\, compassion and peace. \nRegister here \nABOUT DUSTIN WARD\nDustin grew up in Presque Isle\, Maine\, and holds a B.S. in Political Science from USM\, and an M.Div. from Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary.  After the murder of George Floyd in 2020\, Dustin left the parish ministry to begin work as a Racial Equity and Reconciliation Advocate.  He is also an Implicit Bias Educator for MindBridge and a Board of Directors member\, and working partner with the non-profit Atlantic Black Box.  He is also the first Person of Color to be elected a Select Board Member of New Gloucester\, Maine. \nMade possible by generous funding from: First Parish Church (UCC)\, Brunswick\, The Eleanor Humes Haney Fund\, and The Religious Society of Friends\, New England Yearly Meeting Prejudice & Poverty Grant

Sara Gavit and St. Anne’s\, Calais:  The folks of St. Anne’s in Calais are trying new\, creative ways of fundraising. We have modified traditional events and opportunities to fit the realities of our community today. We would love to share what we learned over the past couple years. We will also invite you to share your ideas and stories. What worked well for you and what challenges did your church face? Please join Rev. Sara Gavit and the St. Anne’s Fundraising Committee for a fun\, informative discussion. \nWelcoming Children (Back) into the Pews – The Rev. Cn. Sara D’Angio White:  These last two years have left an indelible mark on children and families with young children. What does it look like to be a welcoming space for children who have been socialized in a radically different way from the generations above them? What does it look like to support the adults in their lives? We’ll look at the research\, consider the mandate to “welcome the little children\,” and wonder together how we can support all generations in our worship spaces.\n\nSocial Justice \n\nEarthkeeping in the Parish: How You and Your Congregation Can Respond to Bishop Brown’s Earth Day Proclamation – Diocesan Creation Care Team and the Rev. Jenny Reece:  This workshop offers the parishes of the Diocese of Maine help in understanding and implementing Bishop Brown’s Earth Day announcement that acknowledges the crisis of climate change. In it he calls for every parish to take leadership in our local communities as we and our neighbors grapple with the results of human carelessness in our relationship with God’s good creation. Set in creation as stewards to “till and keep” it\, we must not only acknowledge where we have fallen short of this\, but must also take action to right what is wrong.  This workshop will equip leaders and members of the parishes with creative resources and ideas to help our churches be rooted in creation-centered worship\, education\, advocacy\, and transformation. Come and find out how to be your parish’s Earth Keeper! Rev. Dr. Jenny Reece is a retired priest in the Diocese of Maine and Chair of the Creation Care Team. \nDiocesan Resolutions and Our Relationship with the Wabanaki People –Committee on Indian Relations:  Interested in learning more about recent and forth-coming Diocesan resolutions regarding our support for our Wabanaki tribal neighbors? Matt Dunlap\, chair of the Committee on Indian Relations (CIR)\, John Maddaus\, chair of CIR’s Legislative Committee\, and Ben Cooke\, sponsor of the resolution on territorial acknowledgements\, will share where we stand on 2021 Convention Resolutions 1 (tribal sovereignty) and 3 (territorial acknowledgements) and preview a 2022 Convention Resolution on Indigenous residential schools. We have a 30-year history of building relationships with our Wabanaki neighbors\, as reflected in several earlier resolutions as well. Join us to discuss where we have been\, where we are now\, and where we may be going.\n\nLiving Out Our Faith \n\nBuilding Bridges: A Deacon’s Ministry\, Bringing People Together –Heather Sylvester and The Rev. Kris Conley:  Join us to learn about and explore the ministry of the deacon\, and to consider your own role in the Church. Deacons are architects of bridges between the church and the world. We use our “four senses” of eyes\, ears\, mind and heart to do this work. We look forward to sharing with you our experiences\, and to hearing about yours. This workshop will be facilitated by The Rev. Kris Conley\, a deacon serving at St. David’s in Kennebunk\, and Heather Sylvester\, who is currently in the process for ordination to the vocational diaconate.\nThe Ministry of Planned Giving – Cn. Terry Reimer:  This workshop serves as an introduction to planned giving\, within the wider framework of stewardship. We will discuss the biblical concept of stewardship as it relates to God’s bounty.  We will also introduce the variety of ways in which gifts can be made to the church from accumulated personal or family resources.  Lastly\, we will provide resources available to us through the Episcopal Church Foundation and The Episcopal Network for Stewardship (TENS). This workshop will be led by Canon Terry Reimer\, the Diocese of Maine’s Canon for Finance and Stewardship.\n\nRegister here
