Earth Day at Oranbega Retreat Center, Orland
Earth Day, April 22, 2021 will be celebrated at Oranbega Retreat Center in Orland with a festival of the Visual Arts. This Zoom event takes place from 7-9 p.m.
The event will feature the Center’s co-founder painter Robert Phipps presenting his recent series of roundel paintings depicting the Outer Islands of Frenchman Bay. He will also introduce participants to his earlier series painted in response to the nuclear accident at Chernobyl in 1986. Phipps, who is in his eighties, will give a little tour of his River Bank Studio at the Center, where he continues to work daily. Also featured is the exciting young environmental artist (some call him a “Rock Star”) David Allen of Sebago, Maine who will be on-site on our river bank to demonstrate how he constructs his amazing granite spheres and constructions of balanced stones and other natural materials. (You can preview his work at http://www.stonepointstudio.com/).
As April is National Poetry Month, the program will conclude with the reading of some poetry reflecting on visual art that depicts the natural world.
A musical tribute to Earth Day will be recorded by our house band, Spence & Co. and can be enjoyed on our Facebook page starting on April 22.
